HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (4-8, 1-2 Southland) came back from a halftime deficit, but the Sam Houston State Bearkats (7-7, 3-1) pulled away in the final minutes to a 64-52 win on Saturday in the Johnson Coliseum.

Sam Houston State scored the final 14 points of the game and pulled away late to a victory. The Bearkats got the go-ahead bucket from Kamry Orr who provided 15 of the Bearkats' 29 bench points on the afternoon.

The Privateers battled back from a nine point halftime deficit at halftime to pull within three heading into the fourth. New Orleans forced back-to-back turnovers and a Shania Woods layup put the Privateers ahead 49-48 with 7:29 left. The Privateers held Sam Houston State to just two points over the next four minutes.

"That's a tough one. I've got to give my girls credit. They played extremely hard. It was just a couple of critical possessions down the stretch when the game was tied, and we had a turnover and they hit a big three. It's not so much that we kept them down. It's a matter of when the turnovers happened," said Coach Keeshawn Davenport.

The Privateers got out to a quick start, scoring 10 of the first 12 points. New Orleans never trailed in the opening stanza and Randi Brown hit a jumper in the final seconds of the first to send the Privateers to a 17-13 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.

Sam Houston State grabbed their first lead of the game at the 5:54 mark of the second on one of four made triples in the first half. The Bearkats steadily put some distance on their lead. The Bearkats got a pair of free throws from Shernise Robertson with six seconds left on the clock to put the Sam Houston State lead at 36-27 at the half.

"If they keep playing like that, we eventually are going to get our road conference win really soon. I was really pleased with our effort. I don't think that the final score is a true tale of the game, but we're going to go back to the drawing board and see if we can get ready for the next one at home," said Davenport.

Randi Brown led the team with 19 points, a career high eight assists, and seven rebounds. Martin scored eight points on 4-of-5 from the field and added three assists along with three rebounds. Shania Woods had seven points and seven boards while Bria Platenburd added six points and seven rebounds. The Privateers out-rebounded Sam Houston State  45-42 overall and 21-1 on the offensive glass.

The Bearkats were led by Angela Beadle who posted 16 points and 15 boards along with two blocks. Orr and Shernise Robertson each added 15 points for a Bearkats squad that went 7-of-15 from three-point range.

The Privateers will face Stephen F. Austin at home in their next contest on Jan. 14. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
