NATCHITOCHES, Louisiana – Senior guard Danielle Davis scored 17 points while freshman center Shania Woods added 13 points and six rebounds, but it was not enough as the University of New Orleans women's basketball team dropped a 70-53 decision to Southland Conference foe Northwestern State on Saturday afternoon in Prather Coliseum.

The Privateers rallied from double-digit deficits to make it a six point affair on several occasions only to see the Demons respond each time. In defeat, UNO fell to 7-16 on the year and 4-10 in conference action. Northwestern State, meanwhile, won its fourth consecutive contest to improve to 16-10 overall and 10-5 in league play.

As a team, New Orleans connected at a .426 clip from the field (20-of-47), slightly better than Northwestern State's mark of .407 (24-of-59). The Privateers also held a 26-20 advantage in points in the paint, a 34-30 edge in rebounds and a 13-12 lead in second-chance points. The biggest issue for UNO on Saturday was turnovers as the Privateers committed 22 and the Demons scored as many points off those miscues.

Davis and Woods were the only two Privateer players to post double-digit scoring totals while sophomore guard Randi Brown and junior Jewel Angelo added seven and six, respectively. Brown paced UNO with four assists, junior Alexis Martin headlined the defense with a pair of steals and the trio of Matthews, junior forward Raven Coleman and senior center Mathilde Fogelstrom each had a blocked shot.

UNO scored the game's first points on a layup by Shania Woods, but that would be the Privateers' lone lead of the contest as Northwestern State jumped out to an 11-4 advantage with 6:25 to play in the opening quarter. The Demon's made it a double-digit differential 2:11 later and the first-half lead swelled to as many as 15 at 25-10 with 6:46 to go before halftime. New Orleans rattled off nine straight points to get to within six only to see the Demons respond with a 11-6 rally over the final three-plus minutes of the second quarter to make it 36-25 at the break.

NSU's late-half surge continued into the third quarter and UNO found itself down 46-33 with 3:24 to play in the period. The Privateers made things interesting over the next few minutes as Randi Brown drilled a 3-pointer, Jewel Angelo converted a layup and Halie Matthews sank a pair of free throws to make it a six-point affair at 46-40. But as they had done all day, the Demons responded with a 12-1 rally that extended into the fourth quarter to stretch the lead to 15 to all but put the game away.

Beatrice Attura led four Northwestern State players in double figures with 18 while Janelle Perez and Keisha Lee added 14 apiece and Cheyenne Brown chipped in with 13. Brown and Tia Youngblood shared team-high rebounding honors for the Demons with seven boards each while Perez led all players with nine assists. Youngblood posted NSU's lone blocked shot and joined Attura and Keisha Lee atop the steals list with two each.

The Privateers return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 24, when they travel to Thibodeaux, Louisiana, to take on Southland Conference foe Nicholls. From there, UNO will play at Abilene Christian on Feb. 27 before closing out the regular season with back-to-back home games against Southeastern Louisiana and Northwestern State on March 3 and 5, respectively.
