NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans baseball team (17-8) scored 10 runs in the first four innings and shut down the Jackson State Tigers (12-11) after the third inning in a 13-4 win on Tuesday night at Maestri Field at First NBC Ballpark.
Â
Both teams traded shots to start the game as Jackson State jumped to a 2-0 lead after their half of the first. The Privateers responded with three in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-2 advantage, but the Tigers leveled the score in the second off a Bryce Brown solo home run.
Â
UNO was able to jump ahead for good in the second with a three-run frame and after four runs surrendered in the first three innings,
Keaton Brewer came in and threw 2.2 scoreless innings to earn his second win of the season.
Â
"We didn't pitch very well in the beginning, but Keaton did a great job," said Coach
Blake Dean. "He came in there, held those guys at bay and showed what he was made of."
Â
The Privateers then opened up the game in the fourth with four runs.
Samuel Capielano hit a two-run single and ended the night as one of two Privateers with three RBIs. Later in the inning,
Aaron Palmer's second double of the night drove in two more runs to push the UNO lead to 10-4.
Â
The Privateers got shutout frames from
Ryan Leone in the seventh,
Jarred Taylor in the eighth, and
Daniel Martinez to cap off the win. Martinez struck out the side in 13 pitches to nail down the 15
th home victory for UNO this season. The Privateers also turned a double play and recorded a line out into a double play in the eighth.
"Our defense is pretty good this year," said Dean. "We made two errors tonight, but our defense has been good for the most part. If our pitchers throw well and get ahead, then we'll have opportunities to win."
Â
The Privateers got strong performances throughout the top half of the order. Palmer went 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs.
Dakota Dean added three hits including a triple, three RBIs, two walks, and two runs.
Hezekiah Randolph was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs.
Chase Caldarera got the start behind the plate and went 1-for-3 with a run and three walks. UNO stranded 17 runners in the game and left the bases loaded three times.
Â
"We didn't do a very good job with runners on third and less than two outs and we didn't execute situational hitting very well," said Dean. "Overall though, they found a way to win and we're looking at the positives after three losses in a row last weekend."
Â
Jackson State was led by CJ Newsome who went 4-for-5 with a run. Jesus Santana was 0-for-2, but drew three walks. Bryce Williams had two RBIs and Brown's homer in the second inning was his first of the year. Tigers pitchers combined to issue 11 walks on the night.
Â
UNO will hit the road again this weekend for a series at Troy. First pitch for the series opener is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m.
