NEW ORLEANS –
Shania Woods set career highs in points and rebounds and the University of New Orleans women's basketball team (8-18, 5-12 Southland) held for a 57-55 win over the Southeastern Lady Lions (4-24, 3-14) on Thursday evening at the Lakefront Arena.
Â
Danielle Davis hit a go-ahead jumper from the top of the key with 42 seconds left to put UNO ahead 56-55. The Privateers then got a steal and
Randi Brown was fouled with just under eight seconds left. Brown split the pair of charity stripe trips. Southeastern had one final shot and Chey Stewart had a lay-up from close range, but missed the mark as time expired.
Â
"We know that they're strong on the inside with Pool and Stewart," said Coach
Keeshawn Davenport. " They like the inside game and they were looking to go inside that last possession. I'm really glad of the defensive stance we had at the end. It was just big inside and I've been telling them all year defense is what's going to win this game."
Â
The game was tight throughout as no team led by more than nine points. The game was tied on 11 different occasions and the lead changed six times. The game was level for 14:40 of game action and the Privateers were able to rely on a large advantage on the boards for the night. UNO out-rebounded Southeastern 45-32 and Woods individually had a career-best 18 boards to go along with a career-high 18 points.
Â
"Shania did that in practice the other day," said Davenport. "Literally, my whole practice I was coaching against Shania asking can anybody stop her. She's been playing with so much confidence. She's doing a great job of establishing herself as a post to be reckoned with in the Southland Conference next year."
Â
Another big difference showed itself at the free throw line. The Privateers had just four trips and two makes from the stripe in the first half while Southeastern was perfect in nine trips over the first 20 minutes. The second half saw a complete reversal as UNO had a 16-2 advantage in attempts and an 11-point advantage on the line.
Â
"That was really important and it was important for us to get the line," said Davenport. "It was 3:20 left in the first half when we shot our first free throw. I don't feel like we were as aggressive offensively to get to the line in the first half. That was an adjustment we made in the second half."
Â
Randi Brown led the Privateers with 22 points and was 5-of-10 from downtown. Brown also added four rebounds and three assists.
Danielle Davis scored nine points and co-led the team with four assists. The Privateers had a 22-10 edge in points off of turnovers and led 16-5 in second chance points. UNO notched their fourth straight win over Southeastern and swept the season series.
Â
Southeastern was led by KaeLynn Boyd who scored 17 points and added seven steals, seven rebounds, and four assists. Nanna Pool scored 10 points and added nine boards. Taylin Underwood and Bre Warren each had seven points. Southeastern was held to 36 percent from the field in the second half.
