NEW ORLEANS – Shania Woods was a menace all afternoon, finishing with 20 points and 19 rebounds – 15 and seven, respectively, coming in the third period – to pace University of New Orleans to a furious comeback that fell just short as the Privateers (1-2) fell to the University of Houston (2-1) 78-66 Saturday at Lakefront Arena.
UNO's comeback was fueled by Woods but the Privateers also took care of the ball in the second half, tallying just six turnovers after 17 in the opening stanza.
The 20 points and 19 boards mark the first double-double of the season for the Privateers.
Randi Brown added 19 points with 11 coming from the charity stripe.
FIRST QUARTER
Houston's trap led to a big advantage for the visiting Cougars as UH took a 31-15 through the opening period. In the frame,
Halie Matthews and
Alyssa Quixley came off the bench with five points apiece.
SECOND QUARTER
A tightly contested period extended the Houston lead to 20 heading into the half, 49-29. The Cougars' transition was key to the lead with 19 fast break points and 26 points in the pain. Dorian Branch led all players with 17 points.
For the Privateers, Matthews and
Mariah Wright paced the way with seven points. Wright added two steals. Woods picked up five points and seven rebounds.
THIRD QUARTER
An explosive third frame cut the deficit to 10 heading into the final period of regulation. Woods took over in the frame with 15 points on 4-of-5 shooting and seven rebounds. She went 7-of-8 from the charity stripe.
FOURTH QUARTER
The comeback fell just short with Houston taking the Preseason WNIT Consolation Bracket at New Orleans 78-66, improving to 2-1 on the season.
