AUSTIN, Texas – The University of New Orleans baseball team continued its non-conference series against the University of Texas on Saturday afternoon, rallying back after allowing three early runs but unable to completely erase the deficit in a 3-2 loss.
Junior third baseman
Owen Magee recorded both of New Orleans' (19-20) RBI, sending senior shortstop
Aaron Palmer home on a single in the fourth inning and scoring senior first baseman
Dakota Dean on a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
"I thought we played a really clean game today," head coach
Blake Dean said. "I thought [Bryan] Warzek had a rough start but settled in and did a great job of keeping us in the game. We have to get something going offensively and have a timely hit. They're pitching staff is one of the best in the country, but anyone is beatable. We just have to keep applying pressure."
Texas (27-15) scored all its runs in the opening inning, using two hits and a pair of walks to score three runs and take the early lead.
Sophomore southpaw
Bryan Warzek logged seven innings on the mound, recovering from allowing three runs in the opening stanza to hold the Longhorns without a run for the following six frames. Overall, Warzek allowed three runs off six hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Junior right-handed pitcher
Rafael Martinez threw one inning of relief, allowing no hits while posting a strikeout.
Palmer paced the Privateers offense with two hits, while junior catcher
John Cable, senior second baseman
Samuel Capielano, sophomore center fielder
Orynn Veillon and Magee all logging one hit. Junior left fielder
Jared McKay got on base twice with two walks, with junior designated hitter
Dakota Phillips and Dean both drawing one walk.
For UT, Ryan Reynolds led the attack with two hits and a pair of RBI, with Travis Jones also logging two hits. Morgan Cooper got the win for Texas after throwing six innings and allowing one run off five hits with seven strikeouts and a walk.
