BILOXI, Mississippi – The University of New Orleans baseball team took on Grambling in a neutral-site game at MGM Park on Tuesday evening, using a career-outing from freshman southpaw
Christopher DeMayo on the mound in a 10-1 victory.
The Stuart, Fla., native held Grambling (19-27) scoreless for a career-high 7.2 innings to get his first collegiate victory, while matching his personal-best with seven strikeouts. He posted five one-two-three innings, and had a no-hit bid going until his final batter, who got on with a single.
"DeMayo did an amazing job today," head coach
Blake Dean said. "It was the best he has looked all year. We would have let him finish the game off if he still had the no hitter going. Offensively we started off slow but we were able to capitalize on free bases and eventually get some nice hits and manufacture runs."
After being held without a run through the first three innings, New Orleans (22-22-1) scored two in the fourth off a pair of bases-loaded walks for junior right fielder
Tristan Clarke and junior catcher
Spencer Miller, and added at least one to the lead in each of the ensuing stanzas.
Sophomore center fielder
Orynn Veillon led the Privateers with two hits, both being home runs, while ending the game on the mound and recording a strikeout for the final out of the game. Junior third baseman
Owen Magee posted a two-run blast with a pair of walks, while senior designated hitter
Hezekiah Randolph and sophomore first baseman
Scott Crabtree each had RBI hits. Senior shortstop
Aaron Palmer rounded the bases twice, joining Magee and Veillon with multiple runs scored.
Overall, UNO ended the contest with nine hits, with seven Privateers getting on base via walks. Â Â
For Grambling, Drain Wesley and Alexander Felder both posted one hit, with Kristian Franklin scoring their lone run which came in the final inning. Jonathan Reid got the start on the mound, logging a team-high 3.2 innings with four walks, four strikeouts and two runs allowed.
The game marks the end of the Privateers' season-long 11-game road swing, returning to the friendly confines of Maestri Field at First NBC Ballpark victors of three of its last four games.
UNO is back in action on Friday, May 5, when they begin a SLC series against Houston Baptist with first pitch slated for 6:30 p.m. For tickets to future Privateers athletic events, contact the UNO Athletics Ticket Office at (504) 280-GAME (4263) and season tickets can be purchased over the Internet by clickingÂ
