Women's Basketball Storms Back In Second Half Against SFA

Down by nine at the break Privateers have big third quarter

New Orleans- The University of New Orleans women's basketball team fought back from a nine-point, halftime deficit with a big third period but couldn't hang on in the final quarter as Stephen F. Austin (12-3, 4-0 SLC) hung on for a 74-67 win Wednesday night at Lakefront Arena.
Trailing 43-34 after 20 minutes of play, the Privateers outscored SFA in the 3rd quarter 23-11 to take a three-point, 57-54 advantage into the final quarter.  Defensive stops and hot shooting from the free throw line propelled New Orleans (6-10, 2-3 SLC) into the lead.  The Privateers largest lead in the period was 5.  The Southland Conference's best free throw shooting club was 16-of-21 from the line in the second half.

SFA outscored New Orleans in the final quarter, 20-10 thanks to balanced scoring and a 30-5 advantage in bench scoring to secure the win.

UNO was led by senior Randi Brown, the leading scorer in the Southland Conference, with a game-high 28 points on 8-of-20 from the field.  Brown was 9-of-11 from the free throw line with 2 assists and 3 steals.

Kayla Mundy hit double figures for the fifth straight game with 14 points, 3 assists and 2 steals.  One of the top free throw shooters in the SLC, Mundy was 5-of-6 from the line.

Point guard Mariah Wright had 8 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds (both team-highs) and 3 steals.

Sophomore forward Asia Woods had 8 points and tied Wright for team-high in rebounds with 5.

UNO outscored Stephen F Austin in points-in-the-paint, 25-20.

Stephen F. Austin place three players in double figures, Stevie Parker (14), Taylor Jackson (11) and Alyssa Mayfield (12) off the bench.

QUOTES FROM COACH
"We had too many situations where we traded.  Just too many possessions where we scored and then allowed them to score.  When you play teams like that you can't do that.  When you're playing teams like that you've got to do the little things that count," said head coach Keeshawn Davenport.

"We'll take a look at the film and as we always say, we'll give God the glory and we'll take the growth.  We'll find the growth areas in this game and we'll continue to progress.  I'm still upset though that somebody just stole one in the Lakefront Arena."
