LAKE CHARLES, La. – The University of New Orleans (10-10, 4-2 Southland) went into the third set with a 2-0 lead, but McNeese (4-15, 2-2 Southland) won three straight sets to beat UNO in five sets 25-23, 25-19, 24-26, 25-19, 13-15 Thursday evening at Memorial Gym
Kaitlyn Grice set a new career high in kills with 17, as she also added four blocks and two service aces.
Ehize Omoghibo finished with 12 kills and four blocks.
Kyra Hunter added 14 kills and
Brianna Vega had seven service aces.
Sarah Thomas and
Amanda Wurster combined for 55 assists in the match.
SET ONE
The Cowgirls got out to an early 8-3 lead, but the Privateers slowly chipped away at the deficit and eventually tied things at 10 highlighted by a pair of aces from Vega. From there the teams traded leads three times as UNO took the opening stanza 25-23. Omoghibo finished set one with five kills.
SET TWO
The Privateers looked to establish their dominance in the set by going up 8-2 to start the set. From there New Orleans led by as much as nine in the set as it went up 2-0 in the match taking set two 25-19. Grice tallied five kills in the set.
SET THREE
The teams were evenly matched throughout the set as there were 13 ties and seven lead changes as McNeese edged the Privateers 26-24 to cut the UNO lead to 2-1.
SET FOUR
The Cowgirls dominated the fourth set and tied things up at 2-2 with a 25-19 set four win.
SET FIVE
McNeese carried the momentum from the previous two sets and completed the comeback taking set five by the score of 15-13.
NEXT UP
The Privateers head west to Beaumont to take on the Cardinals of Lamar University Saturday at 2 pm in McDonald Gym.
