NEW ORLEANS – Bryan Warzek dazzled in his second start of the season, striking out 12 in 7.0 innings of work,
Collin Morrill drove in five runs and
Cody Ducote blasted a three run shot in the University of New Orleans' (3-3) 10-1 victory over Ball State University (2-3) Friday evening at Maestri Field.
Warzek (1-0) allowed just two hits in the dominating outing on the bump. Ducote was 1-for-4 with a three-run shot in the fifth and Morrill's double earlier in the frame cleared the bases. In the eighth, he squeaked a single past the diving shortstop brought home two more to extend the UNO lead.
Darren Willis was 2-for-3 and
Pierce Howard rounded out the order with a 1-for-2 performance in his first collegiate start.
Owen Magee tacked on a two-run single in the eighth.
John Baker (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs in 4.2 innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers bats exploded in a six run fifth with the big blow coming off the bat of Ducote, who's three run homer made it 6-0 UNO. Prior to the long ball, Morrill
Ball State scored its first run in the eighth but New Orleans responded with a two-run Morrill single. Magee followed with a two-run single, making it 10-1 New Orleans.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Privateers will continue the Allstate Sugar Bowl Baseball Classic tomorrow as they take on Virginia Tech at 2 p.m.
