ABILENE, Texas – A pair of four-run innings highlighted the University of New Orleans' (9-11, 2-4 Southland) 14-10 victory over Abilene Christian University (13-5, 2-4 Southland) Sunday afternoon at Crutcher Scott Field.
UNO came out swinging with a big four-run first inning. After two quick outs,
Owen Magee got things rolling with a double to the left field wall and was brought home by Bratton. Following an
Orynn Veillon single, two more were plated on
Cody Ducote's double and the final run of the top half of the first came on the RBI base knock by
Jacob McFadden. The second featured more of the same with the Privateers taking a quick 8-0 lead, highlighted by Ducote's start (double and home run).
Kyle Arjona earned the win (2-1) after tossing 3.0 innings in relief. Colton Brasher (2-2) was tagged with loss after going 1.1 innings giving up seven runs on eight hits.
Every batter in the UNO lineup recorded a hit. Magee finished 3-6 with two RBI, Bratton went 3-5 with three ribbies and a triple,
Collin Morrill finished 3-5 with a triple and
Jay Robinson finished his day at the plate 3-5 with three RBI. Ducote was 2-5 at the dish with a homer and three ribbies. McFadden and
Peace Howard both drove in a run and added two hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
New Orleans jumped out to an early 8-0 lead with a pair of four run innings in the first and second highlighted by Ducote's homer in the second.
ACU got three back in the second to make it 8-3 but UNO responded with two in the third and fourth innings to extend the lead to 12-3.
The Wildcats fought back with three runs in the fifth and one in the seventh to cut the Privateer lead to 12-7 and both clubs traded runs in the eighth.
UNO added an insurance run in the ninth for a 14-8 edge. The Cats tried to rally back in the ninth with two runs but could not complete the comeback as New Orleans salvaged the final game of the series with a 14-10 lead.
The 14 runs tied a season high and the 20 hits is a new season high for the team.
