NEW ORLEANS – For the second time the season
Darren Willis played hero in the University of New Orleans (5-5) 2-1 extra innings win over Arkansas State (3-3) Friday evening at Maestri Field.
The Privateers put the game away in the eleventh after
Jacob McFadden led off the inning with single to left. He later advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Pearce Howard moved Mauldin over on a fielder's choice two batters later. Then Willis stepped up to the plate and singled up the middle to score McFadden.
UNO reliever
John Barr was credited with his first win of the year after tossing 5.0 scoreless innings giving up two hits and punching out four. Jesse Kutzke (1-1) was tagged with the loss after going 2.0 innings, giving up three hits and striking a batter out.
Bryan Warzek was automatic on the bump for the Blue and Silver - tossing 6.0 innings allowing one run to score (unearned) and striking out 12 ASU batters.
For the second straight game, Willis was the offensive spark going 2 for 4 at the plate and driving in both runs.
Owen Magee, McFadden,
Beau Bratton, and
Jay Robinson all tallied a hit in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A-State got the scoring started in the third with an unearned run. An error allowed Drew Tipton to score from second.
The Privateers knotted the game in the fifth at 1-1 when
Jay Robinson was hit by a pitch and later stole second. He came around to score on a Willis single through the right side of the infield.
The University of New Orleans sent the crowd home happy in the eleventh after
Darren Willis drove in the winning in the form of McFadden.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Privateers continue their series with the Red Wolves tomorrow. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
Kyle Arjona is scheduled to pitch for UNO. Arkansas State will counter with left hander Coulton Lee.
