Baseball Upsets Nationally Ranked Southern Miss 14-9

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – A game that featured 35 hits and 14 pitchers concluded with the visiting University of New Orleans (25-28) upsetting No. 18 University of Southern Mississippi (36-15) 14-9 Tuesday evening at Pete Taylor Park at Hill Denson Field.

The Golden Eagles led through three, but New Orleans compiled a season-high 22 hits and reigning Southland Conference Hitter of the Week Owen Magee blasted his team-leading seventh home run of the season and finished 3-for-6 with four RBI. Jay Robinson and Scott Crabtree combined to go 6-for-12 with five RBI and four runs, Devin Morrill was 3-for-4 with three runs and two ribbies and Darren Willis added two hits. Beau Bratton's two hits extended his reached base safely streak to 24 games.

Christopher DeMayo (1-1) tossed 3.0 innings in relief and John Barr and Reeves Martin struck out four in 2.0 frames. The Privateers chased Jarod Wright out of the game after 1.1 innings but Adam Jackson (1-1) was charged with the loss after giving up four runs in 0.2 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers scored two in the opening inning on Robinson's double, but Southern Miss plated six in the bottom frame to take a 6-2 lead.

UNO made it a one-run ballgame following Magee's three-run blast with USM tacking on a run in the second for a two-run cushion.

Magee continued to rake, adding an RBI base knock in the third but a bases loaded walk made it 7-5 Golden Eagles in the bottom half of the inning.

New Orleans regained the lead with a four-run fourth following Bratton's infield single, Crabtree's two-run double and Willis' double down the line.

The Privateer pitching held USM scoreless until the clubs traded runs in the seventh. An inning prior, Southern Miss had a golden opportunity but Rafe Schindler forced a Daniel Keating lineout, Bryant Bowen strikeout and ended the inning unscathed with Orynn Veillon tracking down a ball against the right center field wall to end the frame.

The Silver and Blue extended their lead with a run in the eighth and two in the ninth (Devin Morrill two-run single) to seal the victory 14-9.

NEXT UP
