Houston, Texas- Junior guard
Alyssa Quixley reached a career-high in points but the University of New Orleans (4-7, 0-2) couldn't come back from a huge first half deficit and fell to Southland Conference rival Houston Baptist on the road, 83-74.
Quixley finished with 22 points in 26 minutes off the bench. The St. Augustine, Florida native was 8-of-12 from the floor and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line. 16 of her 22 points came in the second half as New Orleans outscored the Huskies in the second half, 50-33.
"Alyssa played the way she practiced this week and I'm very happy for her,' said UNO head coach
Keeshawn Davenport. "She played with confidence and she played the kind of ball she knew she could play all along but she has suffered through some injuries. It was so good to see her out there playing hard and with confidence today."
New Orleans led for only 20 seconds on the day when
Dionjhae Thomas scored the first points of the game on a layup for a 2-0 Privateer lead. However, the Huskies took the first period 26-12 thanks to 75% shooting from the field (9-0f-12) and 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
HBU more than doubled-up UNO in the second period, 26-12. They grabbed their largest lead of the game, 29 points, at 49-20 and went in at halftime leading 50-24.
"It was a tale of two halves. We did not come out ready to go. We weren't clicking offensively or defensively. It took us a whole half to get going but unfortunately, in the Southland Conference you don't have that luxury."
UNO fought back in the second half…winning the 3
rd quarter 21-17 and taking the final period by 13 points, 29-16.
"We're not going to just bow down and roll over and play dead. So hats off to the team for continuing to fight. Unfortunately, we dug too much of a hole for ourselves to come back from," said Davenport.
Senior center
Shania Woods had 12 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth consecutive double-double. She now has five games of double figures in points and rebounds.
Guard
Jada Duncantell had 7 points, 4 assists and 3 steals. Junior
Kyla Malone had 7 points and career-highs in rebounds (6) and steals (20).
