SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers (11-12, 4-5) saw their rally attempt fall short in a 3-1 loss (25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 25-10) to the UIW Cardinals (5-18, 1-8) on Thursday evening at the McDermott Center.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
Lucie Pokorna had nine kills along with 29 assists and seven digs. Pokorna also was in on three blocks at the net.
Sh'Diamond Holly,
Shelby Pullins, and
Ehize Omoghibo each had seven kills.
Rhyan Rand finished with eight kills and seven digs.
Andrea Nava posted 11 digs and two aces.
FIRST SET
The score was tied five times and the lead changed hands three times. The Cardinals hit their first spurt of the 5-1 variety to build a 13-8 lead. New Orleans clawed back to within two points but could not draw closer.
SECOND SET
The Privateers had the lead in the very early stages of the set but a 9-3 Cardinals run quickly flipped the script. UIW gained a 14-6 lead and withstood a Privateer surge that cut that lead in half over the next four rallies. UIW hit .323 for the set.
THIRD SET
New Orleans kept turning back every Cardinal threat to seize command and finish the match in a sweep. The Privateers led 19-14 but UIW scored the ensuing four points to close the gap to one. The score was tied at 22-22 when
Chloe Hampton buried a kill to put New Orleans back in front. A tandem block by Holly and Omoghibo finished the set and forced a fourth set.
FOURTH SET
In the deciding set, the Cardinals hit .550 (12 kills, one error in 20 attempts. With the score 9-6, the Cardinals won 10 of the next 11 rallies to build a 19-7 advantage. Bethany Clapp (13) and Allison Waits (10) posted double digit kills for the Cardinals.
NEXT UP
The Privateers will take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
