SAN MARCOS, Texas – It came down to the last possession but a three at the buzzer fell short as the New Orleans Privateers (2-4) dropped a narrow 51-49 decision to the Texas State Bobcats on Wednesday at the Strahan Arena.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
Dionjhae Thomas led all scorers with 13 points and added five steals along with four rebounds and three assists. Asia Woods finished with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Whitley Larry had seven boards and two blocks. Jada Duncantell added with seven points. New Orleans outrebounded Texas State 40-31 on the night.
FIRST QUARTER
The Bobcats opened with the first six points of the contest but New Orleans got a quick spark from the bench to answer. A Thomas layup followed by a Bruce triple cut the deficit to 6-5. The Privateers took their first lead of the night on two free throws from Woods. The Privateers scored 10 of the last 12 points in the opening stanza.
SECOND QUARTER
The Privateers continued to open up their lead as they began the quarter with a 5-1 spurt to open a six-point advantage. Texas State scored six quick points to level the score at 15-15 with 3:24 left but the Privateers responded behind four consecutive points from Thomas. New Orleans led 21-18 at the break.
THIRD QUARTER
Texas State hit a 7-0 run near the middle of the quarter to surge ahead 27-23. The Bobcats took their first lead since the first quarter on a fast break layup from Lillie Moore. The home side extended the advantage to as much as seven on a Bailey Halle triple with 1:44 left in the stanza.
FOURTH QUARTER
The press defense worked like a charm early as New Orleans forced four Texas State turnovers within the first two minutes. The Privateers were able to trim the deficit down to one in that stretch. New Orleans got within one possession on five different occasions in the final stanza. Pebbles Pimpton's long three got the Privateers to a 50-49 deficit. After Texas State made one of two free throws, the final possession of the game resulted in a three that came up short.
