Bullpen Tosses 6.0 Shutout in 4-1 Setback to Bulldogs

NEW ORLEANS – The Privateers' bullpen was dominant, striking out six and allowing just two hits in 6.0 innings, but the University of New Orleans (6-2) fell to Yale University (2-3) 4-1 Friday evening at Maestri Field.

The combination of Bailey Holstein, Mathew Oset and Zach Thompson stymied the Bulldog bats, but Yale was able to take the series opener over the Privateers, snapping the six-game win streak of UNO.

The lone hit for UNO came off the bat of Luther Woullard, who's solo shot in the fifth cut New Orleans' deficit to three.

Holstein entered the game in the fourth and silenced the Bulldog bats, allowing just one hit in 4.0 shutout frames. The right-hander struck out three and Oset followed with a three-up, three-down eighth. The right-hander punched out two in 14 pitches and Thompson followed with a K.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers and Bulldogs were scoreless through two, but Yale struck first with four runs in the third on three hits.

UNO's bats were kept honest by Scott Politz until a laser off the bat of Woullard in the fifth. The solo shot was Woullard's first home run as a Privateer, cutting the Yale lead to 4-1.

Politz remained in the game in the ninth looking for a complete game and second win of the season. Wade Raburn drew a walk and YU's pitching coach made a mound visit as the Bulldog bullpen became active for the first time.

WIN-LOSS RECORD
Politz (2-0) earned the win with a complete game. The right-hander allowed four walks and struck out five. Brayson Smith (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing four walks while punching out four.

INSIDE THE BOX
Collin Morrill reached base safely twice (two walks). Dai Dai Otaka went 2-for-4 for the Bulldogs and Griffin Day hit his first home run of the season. A failed pickoff throw led to the second run of the game but a relay from Raburn to Morrill to Antonio Gauthier Jr. gunned down Tim DeGraw trying to advance to third. Brian Ronai struck out and Alex Stiegler was called out on the interference as Beau Bratton attempted to throw to second.

NEXT UP
The Privateers and Bulldogs close the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
