Baseball Jumps to Early Lead but Falls at South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. – The New Orleans Privateers (12-8) fell behind early and could not recover in a 22-7 loss to the South Alabama Jaguars (11-8) on Wednesday night at Stanky Field.

The Jaguars quickly answered a three-run inning at the outset by New Orleans with 13 unanswered runs over their first two turns at the plate. South Alabama got the run total on just eight hits. The Privateers totaled 10 hits on the evening in the loss. Brayson Smith (1-2) took the loss while Tyler Perez got the win (1-0).

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers jumped out of the gate with a 3-0 lead after their half of the first inning. Pearce Howard drove in the first run on an RBI double. Gaige Howard and Tresten Kennard followed with consecutive RBI singles to give New Orleans the lead. However, it quickly flipped to the Jaguars' side in the bottom of the first.

South Alabama sent 10 batters to the plate and scored seven runs on just three hits. In the second, Smith retired the first two batters in the inning but the Jaguars strung together three walks to load the bases afterward. That led to six more runs in the frame including a three-run homer from Michael Sandle to make it 13-3 after two innings.

In the third, New Orleans added another three-spot as they looked to commence a rally. The big hit in the inning came from Robert Fabelo who roped a double up the line to score two. However, the Jaguars had a four-run answer in their half of the third to re-extend their lead to 17-6.

INSIDE THE BOX
Kennard went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Collin Morrill also had a multi-hit night to extend his hitting streak to six games. Salo Iza walked twice and scored twice. Luke Bradley made his second appearance on the mound this season and recorded two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.

NEXT UP
The Privateers will host a three-game conference series against preseason Southland favorite, Sam Houston State. The series will start at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Maestri Field.
