Baseball Rallies From Early Deficit but Falls in Extras to Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (16-17) rallied from an early four-run deficit to force extra innings but fell 5-4 to the Southern Jaguars on Wednesday night at Lee Hines Field.

The Jaguars used eight different pitchers en route to a 2-0 midweek after they defeated nationally ranked LSU on Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Southern loaded the bases in the tenth inning. A one-out double by Ashanti Wheatley was followed by the first Privateer error to put runners on the corners. Willie Ward was intentionally walked to load the bases and that set up Hampton Hudson who punched a single into shallow right to give the Jaguars the extra inning triumph.

Cortlynn Ramirez got his first start and went four innings. The Jaguars got two early home runs from Javeyan Williams and Hunter David to push their early lead to 4-0.

New Orleans got on the board in the sixth inning. Luther Woullard led off the inning with a base hit and eventually came around to score on a two-out RBI single from Beau Bratton. The Privateers dealt a three-run frame an inning later but an out on the base paths prevented them from going ahead.

The Privateers loaded the bases with no outs on a fielding error, walk, and a base hit. Two batters later, Woullard drove a base hit into the gap in left center that brought the first of three runs in. Evan Francioni drew a bases loaded walk that cut the deficit to 4-3. Bratton then singled up the middle but before Woullard could score, the Jaguars got an out at third base on a throw from Williams to end the inning and keep the game tied.

The Privateers got the lead-off man aboard in the ninth and tenth inning but the Jaguars pitched around both situations.

WIN-LOSS
John Barr (3-4) took the loss. Charles Bailey picked up the win for the Jaguars, his first of the season.

INSIDE THE BOX
Woullard and Bratton each had two hits. Bratton also walked twice. New Orleans had 10 hits in total on the evening. Reeves Martin struck out four batters in two innings. Mathew Oset faced the minimum over 1.1 frames. Christopher DeMayo also threw 1.2 scoreless frames.
