Turpin Punches Out 14 in 2-0 Game Two Win, Baseball Splits Friday’s Doubleheader

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The University of New Orleans (17-18, 5-12 Southland) allowed just two total runs in 18.0 innings, recovering from a game one 2-1 loss to shut down McNeese State University (18-17, 5-9 Southland) 2-0 in game two Friday at Joe Miller Ballpark.

UNO's pitching was dominant, not allowing a run in the final 15.0 innings of the double dip.

In the latter ballgame, Chris Turpin stymied the Cowboy bats, striking out 14 hitters in 8.0 shutout frames. Reeves Martin struck out two in the ninth to shut the door for his ninth save of the season.

Gaige Howard extended his reached base safely streak to 19 games with a hit in each contest. Luther Woullard and Tresten Kennard collected two hits apiece in game two.

GAME ONE
McNeese struck first with two runs in the second, but that was enough for the Cowboys to squeak past the Privateers 2-1. Bailey Holstein came out of the 'pen in the third inning and shut down McNeese, tossing 5.2 scoreless frames in relief.

Rhett Deaton cruised into the eighth inning with a 2-0 lead, but the Privateers were able to get on the board after Collin Morrill came around to score on an error. Morrill doubled with two outs and rounded third on Wade Raburn's single/error by the second baseman.

Out came Deaton and in Will Dion to get the final out of the top of the inning.

Aidan Anderson entered looking to shut the door in the ninth, but it wasn't easy for the Cowboys closer as Gaige Howard singled to put the tying run on. Salo Iza fouled off two two-strike pitches before drawing a walk to put the go-ahead run on. It wasn't pretty but Anderson was able to pick up the save to give the Cowboys the series lead with the 2-1 win.

WIN-LOSS RECORD
Deaton improved to 4-2 with 7.2 innings of one-run (unearned) ball. Anderson was credited with his sixth save of the season. Brandon Mitchell fell to 1-3 on the year after allowing two runs in 2.1 innings.

GAME TWO
Morrill battled to lead off the second game of the doubleheader and was hit by a pitch. After moving into scoring position on a balk, Morrill came around to score on the RBI single off the bat of Woullard to put UNO in front 1-0 in the first. That was all Turpin needed as the right-hander struck out 14 hitters in 8.0 innings. It was a season-high in both.

The Privateers added a second run in the fourth after Woullard, who led off with a single, scored on Kennard's base knock.

The Cowboys looked to chip away after leading off the bottom of the fourth with a double but Turpin continued to mow down the McNeese hitters, punching out the side despite the Cowboys putting the leadoff hitter in scoring position to begin the frame.

In the eighth, McNeese put runners in scoring position with two outs, but Turpin ended his evening in style, getting Payton Harden to ground out to him to conclude the inning unscathed.

Martin shut the door in the ninth for the save.

WIN-LOSS RECORD
Turpin improved to 4-2 in the best start for a Privateer pitcher this season. Turp was efficient as his pitch count was relatively low considering the 14 punchouts. The right-hander tossed 108 pitches the 8.0 shutout frames. Martin moved to a perfect 9-of-9 in save opportunities with two strikeouts in the ninth. Jonathan Ellison (2-2) was charged with the loss after allowing two runs in 4.0 innings.

Peyton McLemore allowed one hit and struck out seven in 5.0 innings.
