SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (18-20) fell behind early and could not recover in an 8-3 loss to the Missouri State Bears (12-25) on Thursday at Hammons Field.
Missouri State turned four double plays in the field and seven of their 10 hits went for extra bases. Drew Milllas had four RBI to lead the Bears' offense.
WIN-LOSS
Jake Lochner went 6.2 frames for his third win of the season. The loss was taken by
Bailey Holstein (1-2).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears got the early jump with a three-run first inning. Two one-out walks set the table for Drew Millas who cranked a two-run double. Two batters later, Anthony Herron singled to center to put the Bears up 3-0 after the opening frame.
New Orleans got a run back in the second. After the bases were loaded with one out, Antonio Gauthier brought in the first run of the game for the Privateers on an RBI sac fly. However, Missouri State separated again over the next few innings.
The Bears scored in four of the first five innings. Ben Whetstone added to the early lead with a two-run homer in the third. Back-to-back one-out doubles plated a run in the fourth. A two-run homer by Millas extended the Bears' lead to 8-2 after five frames.
INSIDE THE BOX
Luther Woullard reached base three times and collected two hits along with a stolen base.
Jorge Tejeda also reached base twice and scored a run. Gauthier added two hits, two RBI, and a stolen base.
Brandon Mitchell threw 4.2 innings of relief and did not allow a run after the fifth inning.
NEXT UP
The series continues with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch on Friday.
Chris Turpin will start for the Privateers and Logan Wiley will get the ball for Missouri State.
