NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (19-22) fell behind in the fourth inning and could not recover in a 15-2 loss to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (26-13) on Wednesday night at Maestri Field.
Hunter Slater hit three home runs and drove in eight for Southern Miss. Both totals tied school records. The Golden Eagles also got four hits and four RBI from Gabe Montenegro and Matthew Guidry.
WIN-LOSS
The win was taken by Josh Lewis (1-0) who threw three innings of relief, his longest outing of the season. The loss was taken by
Cortlynn Ramirez (0-2).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers struck the board first in the bottom of the second.
Antonio Gauthier doubled to deep left center, scoring
Gaige Howard. Southern Miss immediately responded on the benefit of two errors to begin the next frame.
Will McGillis and Montenegro both reached on bunts and ensuing errors. Hunter Slater's RBI fielder's choice tied the game at 1-1. The Golden Eagles then went ahead for good with a six-run fourth inning.
The first two batters of the inning got on by virtue of a hit by pitch. RBI singles followed consecutively from Danny Lynch, McGillis, and Montenegro. Two batters later, Slater hit the first of three home runs on the evening. He added another two-run shot with two outs in the sixth. Slater's night concluded with a three-run homer in the seventh.
INSIDE THE BOX
Gaige Howard went 2-for-3 with a double.
Pearce Howard was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
Reeves Martin added a strikeout to his season total and now has 41 in 26 innings.
Salo Iza added his team-leading eighth stolen base of the year.
NEXT UP
The Privateers start a three-game conference series against Lamar on Friday. First pitch for the series opener is set for 6:30 p.m.
