NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (20-22, 6-13) rallied back from a five-run deficit to score a 6-5 victory over the Lamar Cardinals (14-28, 6-16) on Friday evening at Maestri Field.
Reeves Martin nailed down his 12
th save of the season to move one away from tying the program single season record. Martin induced a ground out off the bat of Robin Adames to finish off the comeback victory.
WIN-LOSS
Brandon Mitchell (2-3) netted the victory after pitching three scoreless innings. Ryan Erickson (1-4) was saddled with the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
New Orleans sent 11 batters to the plate in the eighth inning and scored six runs off just one hit. The hit came from
Darren Willis to lead off the frame. After a strikeout recorded by Noah Sills, a walk and hit batter loaded the bases.
Lamar went to the pen and that's where the rally continued for New Orleans.
Luther Woullard started off after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in the first run. Four consecutive bases loaded walks followed.
Willis came up for a second time in the inning and drove a ball deep enough to right field to score what turned out to be the winning run.
The Cardinals built an early lead by takingadvantage of the first of three Privateer errors in the first. Avery George reached second on a two-base throwing error and came around to score on a Cole Coker RBI single.
The Cardinals added a run in the third on a sac fly RBI from Robin Adames. Lamar then put three more runs on the board in the fourth. The scoring started on an RBI triple from Reese Durand. Two batters later, a sac fly from George plated another run.
Cole Girouard then singled with two outs and the bases empty. A stolen base and ensuing error landed him on third. The second RBI single of the night from Coker brought him in to finish the three-spot. The first seven hits collected by Lamar on the night all came from left-handed hitters.
INSIDE THE BOX
Mitchell struck out three over three innings in the win. Martin struck out Girouard to run his season strikeout total to 42 in 27 innings.
Gaige Howard was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Willis was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run.
