NEW ORLEANS – Four errors wound up costing the New Orleans Privateers baseball team (21-23, 7-14) in a 4-2 loss to the Lamar Cardinals (15-29, 7-17) on Sunday afternoon at Maestri Field.
New Orleans again threatened to rally back, but the attempt fell short in the series finale.
Darren Willis doubled to drive in
Gaige Howard and put the tying run in scoring position.
Collin Morrill came up and hit a line drive that was snagged by JC Correa which held the victory.
WIN-LOSS
Josh Hranicky (2-0) picked up the win in his second starting call of the year. The freshman allowed one run on three hits over five innings.
Steven Swift (1-3) was tagged with the loss. The save went to Dylan Johnson.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers committed four errors on the day. The first two came in the Cardinals' two-run third inning, which opened the scoring.
With runners on first and second, Correa singled to left. An ensuing fielding error allowed Avery George to score. Robin Adames then reached on an error to further continue the frame for Anthony Quirion who delivered a sac fly RBI.
New Orleans formed a response in the bottom of the frame. A bunt single from
Antonio Gauthier was followed by a walk drawn by Willis. Two batters later, a single to right from
Wade Raburn plated the first run. However, New Orleans missed a chance to tie as the next two batters flied out.
Lamar further extended their lead in the seventh. The Cardinals loaded the bases on the benefit of two errors. With one out, Robin Adames rolled a single through the right side of the infield to stretch the advantage to 4-1.
INSIDE THE BOX
Willis was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Gauthier reached base on a single and a walk. Raburn extended his hitting streak to seven games with his third inning single. Swift allowed just one hit over his last three innings of work. Swift worked his longest outing of the season, going six innings and allowing two runs (one earned). The four errors tied a single game season high.
