Swift Picks Up First Collegiate Win in Doubleheader Split

NEW ORLEANS – Steven Swift picked up his first collegiate victory as the New Orleans Privateers (16-16, 4-11) won the final game of the series 7-4 over the Southeastern Lions (16-16, 8-4). The Lions won the first game of the doubleheader 7-6 to take the Pontchartrain Bowl.

GAME ONE- Southeastern-7 New Orleans-6
The Lions held off a late charge by New Orleans as Jared Biddy closed things down with a routine ninth inning for his fourth save of the year.

It was an offensive show early with Southeastern scoring five runs in their first two innings. The Privateers countered with four of their own. Three came off the bat of Antonio Gauthier who homered for the third time this year.

Southeastern added single runs in the third and fourth which turned out to be crucial when all was said and done. Kyle Schimpf went 4-for-5 and scored two runs. Nick Ray had three hits and Trey Harrington went 2-for-3 with a homer and an RBI.

The gap was closed to one in the eighth when Salo Iza went yard for his fourth homer of the year off Biddy.

Mason Knopp picked up the win after going five innings and striking out six batters. Chris Turpin (3-2) took the loss. Bailey Holstein held the Lions scoreless over the final frames.

GAME TWO-UNO 7 SLU 4
Swift picked up his first collegiate victory after going 5.1 innings with four runs (three earned) allowed). Reeves Martin added to his career program record by collecting his 20th save (eighth this season) to nail the door shut. John Barr bridged the starter and closer with a scoreless appearance that went 2.2 innings.

The Privateers got the early jump by plating three runs in the first inning against Southeastern starter, Will Warren. The runs were produced by Gaige Howard (RBI single) and Robert Fableo (two-run single) to give New Orleans an early 3-0 lead.

Southeastern responded with a three-spot of their own in the third inning. Cody Grosse collected his second hit in as many at-bats, which drove in a pair of runs. The game was tied on a single and ensuing error.

New Orleans regained the lead in the fourth on the first of two Southeastern errors. An errant throw from Grosse allowed Collin Morrill to score from second and give the Privateers the lead back. Morrill added to the lead an inning later with a two-run single to make it 6-3.
