NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers baseball team (27-24, 11-15) donned the rally caps to pick up a 10-inning 8-7 win in the first game against the HBU Huskies (17-32, 9-17) that was suspended due to rain. A seven-run fifth inning keyed the second win on the day by a 14-6 margin at Maestri Field.
GAME ONE
NEW ORLEANS 8 HBU 7 (10 INNINGS)
The Privateers had to battle back from behind in the tenth inning of the series opener which was suspended on Friday. HBU strung together consecutive hits and Hayden Baker's RBI single put the Huskies ahead 7-6.
However, New Orleans struck back against JT Newton to pick up the win.
Collin Morrill reached on an error and was bunted over to second. An RBI single by
Pearce Howard tied the game at 7-7. After a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases,
Salo Iza bounced a ball past the drawn in infield to give New Orleans their seventh walk-off win of the season.
Reeves Martin (4-0) picked up the win for the Privateers. Newton (0-5) was tagged with the loss. Pearce and
Gaige Howard along with
Darren Willis all had three hits in the contest.
Wade Raburn laid down to successful sac bunts and scored twice.
GAME TWO
NEW ORLEANS 14 HBU 6
The Privateers used a seven-run fifth inning to go ahead for good. The bases were loaded with one out and
Gaige Howard drew a walk to tie the score at 5-5. An error accounted for the go-ahead run and kept the inning going where the bottom of the order delivered a couple of big hits.
John Barr was lights out to pick up the save. He retired all nine batters faced and used just 35 pitches to pick up his second save of the year.
Chris Turpin picked up the win to move to 5-4. The loss was taken by Daniel Endsley (1-4)
Beau Bratton ripped a bases clearing double that plated three runs to further extend the lead. Then Willis slammed a triple into the gap that further extended the lead. The Privateers in all, collected seven runs on six hits.
New Orleans wasted no time jumping ahead in the second game. The Privateers collected three runs on three hits against Endsley. However, the Huskies responded with three of their own in the second.
An RBI single by Erik Voller and an ensuing error produced two runs to put the Huskies ahead 5-3 after the top of the third. The Privateers got a run back in the bottom of the frame on Howard's second double of the afternoon.
INSIDE THE DAY
Morrill collected six hits, four of which came in the second game.
Tresten Kennard homered, his fourth of the season. Willis went 4-for-9 with a double and a triple between both games. The top four hitters in the Privateer lineup combined for 10 hits and six RBI in the 14-6 win.
NEXT UP
The series will close on Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
Steven Swift will start for the Privateers. Zach Carter is scheduled to start for HBU.
