Volleyball Defeats Nicholls, Surges to 2-0 Conference Start

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers (9-7, 2-0) served up another 3-1 victory )25-12, 16-25, 25-22, 25-20) over the Nicholls Colonels (6-6, 0-1) on Thursday in front of a vibrant crowd at the Human Performance Center.
 
Five different Privateers landed in double figures in digs, led by Andrea Nava's 15. New Orleans held Nicholls to a .147 attack percentage for the night. For the second consecutive match, the Privateers recorded 12 total blocks.
 
STATISTICAL LEADERS
Lucie Pokorna had 13 digs and 35 assists. She also added eight kills on a .389 attack percentage. Hannah Volpi and Brianna Vega each had 12 digs on the night. Vega also notched seven kills. Rhyan Rand scored a double-double with 10 digs and a team-high 11 kills. Sh'Diamond Holly had eight kills and four blocks. Shelby Pullins was in on seven blocks.
 
FIRST SET
New Orleans never trailed in the opening set, which ended with a flourish. The Privateers hit .300 while Nicholls had 13 errors (eight attack, four service, one blocking). Vega had her third kill of the set, which ended it in favor of New Orleans at a 25-12 margin.
 
SECOND SET
The Colonels responded to tie the match at 1-1. Nicholls broke an 11-11 tie with a 7-1 run. Two kills by Katie Jones and one kill each by Emily Gauthreaux and Kimberly Iwunze helped fuel the Colonels' run. Nicholls had 15 kills to eight for the Privateers.
 
THIRD SET
The set was played evenly early on, but New Orleans separated to a 21-15 advantage late on. Nicholls came back to close the gap to a point, but the Privateers staved off the late rally to take a 2-1 lead. Ehize Omoghibo had a kill to bring New Orleans to set point, which was converted by Vega on the next rally.
 
FOURTH SET
The Privateers endured a set that featured three early lead changes. The lead was opened to five at 16-11. The Privateers built up a lead as large as seven and were able to see out the rest of the match. A block by Pullins and Rand helped vault the Privateers to a 2-0 start in Southland play.
 
NEXT UP
The Privateers hit the road for a bout with Sam Houston State on Thursday, Oct. 3. First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
