Privateers Battle but Fall Short vs. Arkansas State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The New Orleans Privateers got off to a hot start in their final match of the weekend but could not overcome the Arkansas State Red Wolves in a 3-1 defeat (22-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-20) on Saturday evening at Reed Green Coliseum. The Red Wolves had 14 blocks in the victory.

STATISTICAL LEADERS
Brianna Vega finished up with 18 kills on the night. Ehize Omoghibo joined her in double figures with 11. Andrea Nava added 28 digs to her season total and had 75 digs over the three matches this weekend. Sh'Diamond Holly was in on three blocks.

FIRST SET
Brianna Vega started the set on fire to help spearhead the Privateers' offense. The senior outside hitter had seven kills in 12 attempts. Omoghibo also chipped in with five kills including the last of those, which wrapped up the set for New Orleans.

SECOND SET
Arkansas State pulled off a run of six consecutive points, which gave them the cushion they needed to finish out the set. The Red Wolves led by four at 13-9 when the run was finished. New Orleans closed the gap to within a point but could not get back on level terms for the remainder of the set.

THIRD SET
The Red Wolves hit .323 in the set that put them ahead 2-1. They had 11 kills to just one error in 31 attempts. The set ended with a 4-0 spurt for Arkansas State. A service ace from Malgorzata Andersohn turned into the clinching point.

FOURTH SET
New Orleans got out to a fast start as they looked to push the match to five sets. The Privateers scored five of the first six points and led 14-9 at one point. However, Arkansas State came roaring back with a run of six straight of their own. New Orleans briefly retook the lead at 16-15, but the Red Wolves went ahead for good shortly afterward with a 6-1 spurt.

NEXT UP
The Privateers return home where they will host Tulane for the first time in six years on Tuesday, Sept. 10. The match is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.
