NEW ORLEANS – It was a night that started out with a dominating pitching performance but a late offensive outburst vaulted Southern to a 9-3 victory over the New Orleans Privateers on Friday evening at Maestri Field.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
Darren Willis went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.
Chris Turpin had a strong debut with six innings and one hit allowed. The run allowed was unearned.
Salo Iza reached base three times (two walks, one single).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Jaguars exploded offensively late on with eight runs over the final three innings. A pair of 0-2 singles set the stage for what turned into a six-run inning where 12 Jaguars came to the plate. Southern added another run in the eighth and one more in the ninth.
With a fierce wind blowing in from left, the power was neutralized. Early on, it was the pitchers dominating the game until New Orleans got on the board in the third inning.
Gaige Howard singled to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a passed ball.
The Jaguars had a quick answer in the fourth. Leadoff hitter, Hampton Hudson singled to lead off the inning. He successfully stole second and got to third on an ensuing error. He later scored on a Jovante Dorris sac fly.
WIN-LOSS
The win went to Jacob Snyder who overcame some early struggles. He went four innings and struck out five.
Collin Kulivan took the loss.
NEXT UP
The Privateers will play Grambling on 6 p.m. at Wesley Barrow Stadium.
