NEW ORLEANS – A nine-run third inning and a strong performance by
Brandon Mitchell keyed a 10-2 victory for the New Orleans Privateers (1-2) over the Prairie View A&M Panthers (0-4) on Sunday at Maestri Field.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
Mitchell threw five innings and allowed just three hits. He recorded six strikeouts to one walk in 72 pitches (47 strikes).
Luther Woullard went 4-for-5 with four RBI and a run.
Pearce Howard hit his 13
th homer of his collegiate career.
Salo Iza chipped in with two hits, two RBI, two runs, and a stolen base.
Beau Bratton and Antonio Gauthier also added two hits apiece while
Darren Willis tallied a hit and an RBI.
WIN-LOSS
Mitchell picked up the win in his first start of the season after he had 10 starts in his freshman year. Tracy Warren took the loss and was charged with nine runs (six earned).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The deciding frame started straight away with a double by Iza into the gap in left-center. After a single by Pearce, it came to Woullard who singled in both runs. One batter later,
Hudson LaBorde doubled to make it 3-0.
In all, 13 batters came to the plate. Iza in his second at-bat of the inning, singled to drive in two more runs. New Orleans racked up eight hits in the frame.
Prairie View got on the board in the fifth on a line drive double by Andrew Paige. The Privateers immediately canceled that run out on Pearce's home run.
Christopher DeMayo was first call out of the pen and threw two scoreless frames.
Cortlynn Ramirez followed with a scoreless inning. The Panthers notched their second tally on an RBI groundout by Jaylon Smith.
Nicolas Johnson also made his Privateer debut and registered a strikeout in the ninth. New Orleans outhit Prairie View 14-5.
OF NOTE
This was the second meeting between these two teams. New Orleans has outscored Prairie View 24-2 in those two contests.
NEXT UP
The Privateers will start a six-game road trip in Hattiesburg, Miss. against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
