Privateers Fall Short in Walk-Off Fashion at Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The New Orleans Privateers (1-3) pitched out of some big spots but ultimately surrendered a walk-off two-run hit in a 6-5 loss to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (4-0) on Tuesday at Pete Taylor Park.

WIN-LOSS
The win went to Hunter Stanley who struck out six batters over the final 2.2 innings. Collin Kulivan took the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
On a night where both teams pitched out of big situations, New Orleans was able to break a 4-4 tie in the seventh on a Darren Willis bases loaded walk. The Privateers were able to hold Southern Miss in check until the deciding ninth inning.

A ground out to second started the frame and Fisher Norris hit a little dribbler but reached on a fielding error. Two consecutive singles set the stage for Reed Trimble who drove a liner into right to give the Golden Eagles their third consecutive one-run victory.

After falling behind 2-0 in the opening inning, the Privateers scored four in the top of the second with the benefit of just one hit. Two bases loaded walks and two hit batters gave the Privateers their first lead of the night.

Southern Miss responded in the bottom of the second when Matthew Guidry doubled into the gap to tie the score at 4-4. After that, the Privateers' combination of pitchers was able to hold Southern Miss off balance and got out of some tough spots in the middle innings.

Cristian Poche came in with two on and one out in the fifth and got the next two batters on a line out and a fielder's choice. Then, Cortlynn Ramirez followed by coming back from down 3-0 in the count to get a pop out from Danny Lynch which left the bases loaded for Southern Miss.

STATISTICAL LEADERS
Willis drove in a pair of runs and went 1-for-2 at the plate. Max Dias collected his first collegiate hit. Hudson LaBorde scored twice. Lamkin went 2.2 scoreless innings on the mound with three strikeouts. Poche and Ramirez combined for 2.1 scoreless frames.
