JONESBORO, Ark. – The New Orleans Privateers (2-3) found a way with a ninth inning rally to score a 5-4 victory over the Arkansas State Red Wolves (2-2) on Friday at Kell Field at Tomlinson Stadium.
WIN-LOSS
Christopher DeMayo (1-0) got a huge out in the eighth inning and earned the victory. The loss went to Kollin Stone (0-1).
Collin Kulivan picked up the save, his first of the season.
THE RALLY
Trailing 4-3 in the ninth and down to the last strike twice, New Orleans found a way back with two runs off closer, Kollin Stone. It started with
Salo Iza who reached on the first of two errors in the inning. After
Gaige Howard drew a walk,
Jamarian Crain dropped a single into shallow center that tied the score at 4-4.
Pearce Howard hit a comebacker on the ground that glanced off Stone's glove. A base hit and an ensuing Red Wolves error scored Gaige from second to put the Privateers ahead. After DeMayo got the first out of the inning, Kulivan picked up the save by retiring the next two batters in order.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Red Wolves jumped ahead for the first time in the seventh inning, the first time they acquired the lead. Jake Gish pinch hit and was hit to start the frame. An ensuing walk and hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. Then Drew Tipton drew a four-pitch walk to score the tying run.
The Privateers called on
Jacob Lamkin who got the next two batters on a strikeout and a fielder's choice. However, Tyler Duncan took a first pitch that hit him and brought across the go-ahead run.
New Orleans started the chilly day with a run in the first on the first of two RBI off the bat of Pearce. A single drove in Gaige to put the Privateers ahead 1-0. Crain added a run when he reached on an error and scored later on a sac fly.
Ben Klutts homered to put the Red Wolves on the board in the bottom of the third inning. A two-out single by Sky-lar Culver tied the score at 2-2 in the fifth.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
Gaige busted out for three hits and two runs scored. Pearce drove in a pair and added two hits.
Beau Bratton was 1-for-3 with a double.
Chris Turpin got the start and went five innings with two runs allowed on five hits and five strikeouts.
NEXT UP
The series continues with a first pitch set for 2 p.m. on Saturday.
