JONESBORO, Ark. – In his first start of the season,
Eric Orze was dominant as the New Orleans Privateers (3-3) scored an 11-0 victory over the Arkansas State Red Wolves (2-3) on Saturday at Kell Field at Tomlinson Stadium.
The win was full of firsts: Orze's first win of the season, Furr's first collegiate start, Meier and Jones making their first appearances on the mound, and
Beau Bratton getting his first start at first base.
WIN-LOSS
Orze pitched five shutout innings and struck out seven batters in the shutout victory. The loss went to starter, Zach Jackson who allowed five runs (one earned) in three innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The scoring started early as
Jamarian Crain reached third on a three-base throwing error.
Pearce Howard then drove the first of his three runs on a sac fly to put the Privateers ahead 1-0. A four-spot in the third inning continued the onslaught.
Salo Iza drew a bases loaded walk to push the lead to 2-0. Two batters later,
Jorge Tejeda plated two more on a single to center. New Orleans continued to pile on to the lead with two more runs in the fifth. One scored on a wild pitch and another scored on a sac fly.
With the Privateers in cruise control, the bullpen handled the rest.
Kyle Khachadourian threw two scoreless innings of relief.
Brett Jones and
Keith Meier, each making their Privateer debuts threw a scoreless frame.
Kasten Furr made his first collegiate start and went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk. Every Privateer started reached base on the day.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
The Privateers outhit Arkansas State 10-5. Crain scored four runs and drew two walks.
Luther Woullard and Furr each had two hits and an RBI. Pearce had three RBI and
Gaige Howard went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Privateer pitchers recorded nine strikeouts and issued just two walks on the day.
New Orleans also swiped two bases on the day as Tejeda and Gaige each had their first steal of the season.
NEXT UP
The series concludes on Sunday with a first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
Bailey Holstein will get the start for the Privateers.
