JONESBORO, Ark. –
Pearce Howard broke a tie with a ninth inning solo homer and the New Orleans Privateers (4-3) came back for a 2-1 win over the Arkansas State Red Wolves (2-4) on Sunday at Kell Field at Tomlinson Stadium.
The sweep was the first in a series on the road for New Orleans since March of 2018 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
WIN-LOSS
Collin Kulivan (1-2) picked up the win after working 1.1 scoreless innings. The loss went to Jack Jumper (0-2).
Jacob Lamkin picked up his first save of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
On a cold, dreary day, offense was at a minimum as both pitchers and defenses set the tone early.
Bailey Holstein gave the Privateers 6.1 innings on the hill and allowed just two hits and a run. The lone run came on a Jaylon Deshazier sac fly in the fourth inning.
New Orleans was denied several times by big plays in the field from the Red Wolves defense. That is until the eighth when
Salo Iza drew a lead-off walk against Jumper. A sac bunt from
Kasten Furr moved Iza to second and he was brought in on an RBI single from
Jackson Murphy. The junior catcher, who made his first start of the season, also threw out a runner trying to steal earlier in the contest.
The ninth inning saw Pearce continue to battle deep into the count until he drove a 1-2 pitch over the right field fence to put the Privateers on top.
Lamkin came in and induced a ground ball which turned into a web gem of a play from Furr for the first out. Then, the freshman pitcher struck out the next two batters to preserve the sweep for the Privateers.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
Luther Woullard went 2-for-4 with a double on the afternoon.
Gaige Howard added a hit and had six hits for the weekend. Between Holstein, Kulivan, Lamkin, and
Cristian Poche, the Privateers limited Arkansas State to just three hits on the game.
NEXT UP
The Privateers start a five-game week on Tuesday, Feb. 25 against South Alabama. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
