NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers (7-4) jumped out to a massive early lead and cruised to a 17-8 win over the UConn Huskies (3-5) on Saturday at Maestri Field to clinch the weekend series.
The win moves the Privateers to 4-1 on Leap Day. It was their first game played on Feb. 29 since 2008 (Vermont).
THE ONSLAUGHT
The Privateers began their offensive outburst early against Dunlop. It started with a two-run homer by
Pearce Howard in the opening frame.
The second homer of the game came an inning later as
Salo Iza parked one over the left field fence as part of a three-run inning. The biggest explosion came when New Orleans plated seven runs in the third that made the score 12-0.
The outburst began with a
Luther Woullard triple and ended with the Privateers batting around for the first of two times in the game. New Orleans collected four hits, drew two walks, and two hit by pitches in the inning.
ORZE SETS THE TONE
Orze came out firing with two strikeouts in the first inning. He retired the side in order and the Privateers' offense went to work from there. He went six innings and allowed two runs (one earned). He also racked up eight strikeouts and didn't walk a batter.
OFFENSIVE LEADERS
Every Privateer starter collected a hit. Woullard was 3-for-5 with a triple, two RBI, and two runs.
Beau Bratton was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and two runs.
Jorge Tejeda and
Darren Willis combined to go 4-for-6 with five RBI and four runs.
Gaige Howard was 2-for-3 with three runs while Pearce drove in four.
Keith Meier and
Collin Kulivan each threw a scoreless inning out of the pen.
Cristian Poche struck out two in the final inning.
NEXT UP
The Privateers will go for the sweep on Sunday at 12 p.m.
Bailey Holstein will get the start for New Orleans while Nick Krauth will start for UConn.
