NEW ORLEANS –
Collin Kulivan pitched out of a couple of big situations in the middle innings and the New Orleans Privateers (10-6, 2-1) pulled away late to a 9-1 win over the Nicholls Colonels (8-8, 1-2) on Sunday at Maestri Field.
WIN-LOSS
Kulivan went 3.1 scoreless innings and struck out four batters in the win. Nick Heckman (1-1) took the loss/
Kyle Khachadourian closed out the game as he spun the final 2.1 innings with just one hit allowed and two strikeouts.
OPENING IT UP
The Privateers plated five runs with the combination of timely hits, aggressive baserunning and Nicholls errors. New Orleans stole two bases between
Jamarian Crain and
Salo Iza. The Colonels also committed three errors as the home side sent nine batters to the plate. Iza singled back up the middle which plated two of the five tallies.
BIG SPOTS
Kulivan was guarding a 3-1 lead at the time he entered for
Bailey Holstein. With the bases loaded and one out, Kulivan induced an inning ending double play off the bat of Justin Ory. Once again, Kulivan pitched out of a bases loaded spot in the fifth with a strikeout.
THE LEAD
After New Orleans committed two errors in the top of the first, they quickly got the run back in the bottom half.
After back-to-back one-out baserunners,
Beau Bratton came up and delivered an opposite field RBI single on an 0-2 count to tie the score at 1-1.
New Orleans then surged in front a frame later. An RBI fielder's choice by
Darren Willis plated Antonio Gauthier to give the Privateers the advantage.
Jamarian Crain followed with a double off the left field wall. The Privateers chased Heckman after just 1.1 innings and 53 pitches.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
Jorge Tejeda homered in the seventh to extend the Privateer lead to 4-1 at the time. He went 2-for-5 on the day. Iza drove in a pair of runs and the Privateers earned nine walks. Eight of the Privateers' nine starters scored a run.
NEXT UP
The Privateers will remain at home on Tuesday when they face Southern. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
