SAN ANTONIO – The New Orleans Privateers got 14 kills from
Alexis Parrish in a 3-0 loss to the UIW Cardinals on Thursday evening at the McDermott Center.
Parrish had five of her kills in the first set but the Privateers were left to battle back from substantial early deficits in each of the first two sets.
HOW IT HAPPENED
New Orleans fell behind 10-2 early in the opening set. That's when two tandem blocks ignited a comeback as the Privateers leveled the score at one point at 16-16. UIW held strong though despite behind held to an .097 attack percentage.
The second set started in similar fashion as UIW got out to an 11-1 lead. New Orleans had four blocks in the set though and came back to cut the Cardinals advantage to 21-16 at one point. UIW then scored four of the last five points on the strength of two total blocks by Annamarie Alvarez.
New Orleans began with a 3-1 lead in the third set and the score was close throughout the set until UIW closed with a 5-1 run to take the set 25-19. Three kills and an assist by Chase Jackson in that stretch helped seal the victory for the home side.
UIW hit .348 in the final set and had 10 blocks for the match.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
Trinity Jackson had six kills and co-led the team in digs with 15.
Sheilah Purcell added 15 more digs to her season total as she came in averaging 4.86 digs per set.
Sh'Diamond Holly had five kills and was in on three blocks (one solo, two assist).
Four different Privateers: Purcell, Parrish,
Tara Goolsby and
Molly Kehoe recorded an ace. Goolsby had 26 assists on the night and was in on four blocks.
NEXT UP
The Privateers will take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday at 1 p.m. for their last road match of the regular season.
