RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The New Orleans Privateers took the opening set but were unable to sustain the momentum in a 3-1 loss to the UC-Riverside Highlanders in their final match of the CBU/UCR Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers came out hot with a .327 attack percentage and 20 kills in the opening set. Their defense also held UC-Riverside to a .182 attack percentage for the opening set.
Rita Zecchin had six kills including the last on the deciding point of the set which gave the Privateers a narrow 25-23 victory.
However, UC-Riverside turned it around. They steadily pulled away in the second set after a close bout early. The Highlanders improved their attack percentage to .293 in the second set.
The third saw UC-Riverside's most efficient attack statistically. They outpaced New Orleans 14-9 in kills and hit .323 for the set to take a 2-1 lead.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
Zecchin had 12 kills to co-lead the squad along with
Tara Goolsby who chipped in a dozen kills of her own, setting a new season high. Zecchin also had her second double-double of the season with 15 digs.
Alexis Parrish had eight kills and
Maxine Walsh added six.
Atira Jells led the way defensively at the next with four total blocks.
Sheilah Purcell led the way in digs with 26.
Trinity Jackson also eclipsed double digit digs for the second time in the tournament with 10.
NEXT UP
The Privateers will travel to Ruston to participate in a tournament hosted by Louisiana Tech. They are also scheduled to face Southern and Little Rock.
