NEW ORLEANS – University of New Orleans guard
Derek St. Hilaire was named both the Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week as well as the Louisiana Sports Writer's Association Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Last week at HBU, and at McNeese St. Hilaire averaged an incredible 28.5 points per game on 18-of-32 shooting (.532) with 10 total rebounds, and nine total assists on the way to a pair of conference victories for the Privateers.
On Thursday in at HBU St. Hilaire made 10-of-15 attempts on his way to career- high 34 points. Last night in a nationally televised game in Lake Charles, the graduate student got things going in the second half to help spark the UNO comeback, finishing with a team-high 23 points, and season-high six assists.
The Privateers have now won eight straight contests – their best winning streak since 1996, and have started 5-0 in conference play for the first time since 1993. During the winning streak the Atlanta native is averaging 25.1 points per game, connecting on 50% of his shots from the floor, and 43% of his shots from beyond the arc.'
Derek has been named Southland Player of the Week twice this season and for the third time in his career. It is also the second time this season the LSWA has given the weekly award to him, and he also earned the LWSA's Player of the Month award for the opening month of the season.
St. Hilaire joins teammate
Troy Green (Jan. 17) in sweeping the weekly awards in a single week this season.
