Privateers Set New Program Record in Win vs. Texas A&M-CC

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers (13-10, 7-4) broke a program record and defeated the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (7-18, 7-4) for the first time since joining the Southland. New Orleans scored a 3-1 (25-16, 12-25, 25-19, 25-21) victory on Saturday at the Human Performance Center.
 
RECORD BREAKERS
New Orleans is now 9-0 at home between the HPC and Lakefront Arena. That surpassed the 1998 and 2004 team for the best home start in program history.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
New Orleans had five of their 10 blocks for the match in the fourth and deciding set. The Privateers overcame an 8-5 deficit with three straight points to level the score at 8-8. With a 16-15 lead, New Orleans went on a 9-4 run to close out the set.
 
The match win was the second against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in 13 career meetings. With the win, New Orleans moves into a tie with HCU for second place in the Southland.
 
The Privateers came out with a flying start. After a five-point spurt put New Orleans ahead 8-6, the Privateers continued to generate momentum with a fierce block. Four blocks in the first set helped establish New Orleans with a lead. The Islanders were held to an .059 attack percentage.
 
Kyndal Payne took over the second set as she registered the last seven Islander kills. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi had 20 kills as a team and hit .444 to tie the match at 1-1. Leah Stolfus also set the tone with seven kills in the first 15 Islander points.
 
Once New Orleans took a 3-2 lead in the third set, they never relinquished it and the set was never tied at any point. Chandler Lee registered five kills as the Privateers only had one attack error in 32 attempts, good for a .313 attack percentage.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
Lee registered 11 kills and hit .476 on the match. Trinity Jackson finished with 10 kills. Sheilah Purcell led the way in digs with 15. Sydney Gott and Mauri Carver had three total blocks each. Kristi Gomez finished with nine digs and six kills.
 
NEXT UP
The Privateers will play on Thursday, Oct. 27 in Hammond against Southeastern at 6:30 p.m.
