NEW ORLEANS – On a night where
Tiana Gipson scored a career-high 12 points and sank a career-high four three-pointers New Orleans (1-12, 0-6 Southland) fought hard but eventually fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (13-7, 5-1 Southland) 56-46 on Thursday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateer defense was swarming during the opening frame forcing eight Islander turnovers with six steals, and
Jomyra Mathis added four first quarter points as the Privateers trailed 11-9 after the first 10 minutes.
Trailing 30-19 at the break the Privateer young women kept fighting outscoring the Islanders 17-13 in the third quarter, keeping the game in reach. Mathis got a friendly roll cutting the Islander lead to 43-38 with 9:27 to play before both teams went on an extended scoring drought.
With 2:05 to play Makinna Serrata – who finished with 21 points for the Islanders - hit a jump shot to extend their lead to double-digits at 51-40. The teams traded free throws down the stretch as the Islanders held on for the 10-point victory.
INSIDE THE BOX
- Gipson led the Privateers with a career-high 12 points, hitting a career-best four shots from beyond the arc.
- DeArica Pyror's streak of double-figure games extended to eight games when she made a pair of free throws with under 90 seconds to play. She also added five assists.
- The Privateers forced 23 Islander turnovers with a season high 13 steals. UNO converted those turnovers into 21 points.
- The Privateers were plus-eight on the turnover margin, also a season high.
