NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers (10-5) held the South Alabama Jaguars (12-3) in check for most of the game but a late inning surge saw South Alabama score a 6-1 victory on Tuesday evening at Maestri Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers notched an early run when they scored on a
Pearce Howard RBI single to make it 1-0. That was enough for the moment as
Kyle Khachadourian held the Jaguars offense scoreless through four innings.
However, the first breakthrough came in the fifth when Santi Montiel hit the first of two solo homers to level the score at 1-1. In his next turn at bat, Montiel again delivered a home run to left field that put the Jaguars ahead for the first time on the night.
A close game throughout was blown open in the eighth inning as South Alabama sent eight to the plate and scored four runs. A one-out error and an ensuing walk put two on for the Jaguars. Then Hunter Stokes delivered the first of four runs with an RBI single.
Montiel, who had the big night at the plate, delivered again with a two-run double. For the night he had three hits and four RBI.
When the dust settled the Privateers were left with too much to do. Jackson Boyd came in relief and shut the game down with two scoreless innings. Tyler Lehrmann picked up the win after allowing just a run on six hits in seven innings.
INSIDE THE BOX
Howard went 3-for-4 with a double off the wall in the ninth inning.
Kasten Furr had a hit and his first stolen base of the season. Larry went 2-for-4 with a run scored. The pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts on the night.
