Privateers Fall in Shootout vs. Northwestern State

NEW ORLEANS – The Northwestern State Demons and New Orleans Privateers were tied through five innings but offense took over as the Demons notched a 16-10 win in the series finale on Sunday at Maestri Field.

DECISIONS
Drayton Brown threw 5.2 innings and picked up the win, his third of the season. The loss went to Jacob Lamkin, his first decision of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
New Orleans notched a first inning run when Kasten Furr scored on an Anthony Herron Jr. double. The score remained 1-0 until the fifth when back-to-back walks were drawn. The second by Cole Horton brought home the tying run.

The Demons then exploded for nine runs in the sixth. After a pop out started the inning, the Demons hit five consecutive singles. The inning ended with a bang when Northwestern State had two doubles and a Fontenot home run to push their lead to 10-1.

New Orleans battled and started to get to Demons pitching down the stretch but there was too much left to do. Jeissy De la Cruz homered to drive in three in the sixth inning which cut the Demons advantage to 10-4.

Northwestern State threatened to end it on a run rule after they plated five runs in the top of the seventh. However, the Privateers came back with five runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Two of those runs scored on a Travis Gober double, one of two he had on the day.

INSIDE THE BOX
De la Cruz finished with three hits and five RBI on the day. Furr scored three runs and had a single. Herron went 2-for-5 with two RBI. The Privateers went through nine pitchers on the day. Jacob Mead turned in another scoreless outing, this time spanning 1.2 innings.

NEXT UP
The Privateers will begin a busy week against Tulane on Tuesday, Mar. 29. First pitch for the game is set for 6:30 p.m. at Maestri Field.
