HAMMOND, La. – The New Orleans Privateers (30-21) scored double-digit runs for the second consecutive game and staved off a late rally to score a 10-9 win over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Friday.
With the win, the Privateers have advanced to play Saturday night against the winner of Southeastern-Texas A&M-CC which takes place earlier in the day at 1 p.m.
RECORD BREAKER PART TWO
Pearce Howard is at the top of the list in another category after he moved ahead of Brian Traxler with a three-RBI night. Howard tied the game on a fielder's choice in the fifth inning and dropped in a two-run single in the sixth to move his RBI total to 209.
DECISIONS
Jack Williams picked up his seventh win of the season. The loss went to Hayden Thomas (4-5).
Dylan Cunningham earned his first save of the year after he finished the game by pitching the last 3.2 innings.
INSIDE THE BOX
Miguel Useche delivered four hits including three doubles and had two RBI.
Amani Larry went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Issac Williams had two hits and two RBI.
Andrew Guidry had a hit and two walks with two runs.
Kyle Khachadourian started and went four innings with three strikeouts and three runs allowed on five hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers got on the board first with a run each in the second and third. It was a game of offensive bursts on each side as the lead changed hands four times. With the Privateers trailing 5-4, Larry delivered a two-run single in a four-run sixth inning.
With the hit, Larry is now 9-for-10 with the bases loaded this season. Howard's two-run single pushed the Privateer lead to 8-5.
With the advantage at 8-6 heading into the seventh, Williams hit his first home run of the tournament, a two-run blast to left-center to push the lead to four. The Islanders came back with a run in the seventh then got a two-run homer in the ninth off the bat of Josh Caraway.
Cunningham recovered to get the next two batters out as Leo Markotic flied out to right to seal the Privateers' 2-0 start to the Southland Tournament.
With a win on Saturday night, the Privateers will advance to the Southland Championship.
