Privateers Defeated by Host, UT-Arlington in Opener of UTA Invitational

ARLINGTON, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers (5-5) got out to a substantial second set lead but the UT-Arlington Mavericks ultimately came back and won the third set to defeat New Orleans 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-16) on Friday at the College Park Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers fell into a 12-5 deficit early in the first set but steadily chipped away at the deficit. New Orleans closed the gap to 19-16 after a Sydney Gott kill. However, the Mavericks held off the challenge and finished the set on a 6-2 run.
 
New Orleans hit .280 for the opening set, their best attack percentage in any set on the day.
 
Set two started evenly before the Privateers hit a big spurt that was facilitated by three blocks. New Orleans went on a 7-1 run and led 15-9. However, the Mavericks rallied back late behind three kills down the stretch from Brianna Ford to take the second set.
 
UT-Arlington got out to a big lead and never relented in the third set. The Mavericks had four blocks in the third set and for the match hit .337.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
Trinity Jackson led the way with nine kills and added four digs. Sophia Ewalefo had eight kills, six digs and was in on two blocks. Gott was in on five of the team's six blocks. Rita Zecchin led the way in digs with 12.
 
NEXT UP
The Privateers will face Lamar (11 a.m.) and Prairie View A&M (4 p.m.) on Saturday.
