Privateers Set National Block Records in Sweep of Prairie View A&M

ARLINGTON, Texas – New national marks were hit or tied as the New Orleans Privateers (6-6) scored a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-22) sweep over the Prairie View A&M Panthers on Saturday afternoon at the College Park Center.

RECORDS SET
The 17 blocks by the Privateers were the most in a three-set match this season. That eclipsed the previous mark of 15 which was shared by four different teams (Kansas State, St. Mary's, Wisconsin and Georgia).

Sydney Gott also recorded nine total blocks. That mark tied her for the national lead in a single three-set match this season.

ALL-TOURNAMENT
Kamryn Scroggins and Rita Zecchin made the all-tournament team. Scroggins finished with 65 assists, 20 digs and had four total blocks over the weekend. Zecchin had 59 digs over three matches and contributed five service aces.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers put their stamp on the match early as they raced out to a 7-1 lead. It was a prelude of what was to come as New Orleans strung together three blocks in that stretch. New Orleans limited the Panthers to a -.167 attack percentage and forced 10 attack errors in the opening set.

New Orleans put together a 6-0 run early in the second set to move ahead 8-4. However, Prairie View A&M stormed back and took an 18-15 lead. The Panthers got kills from three different players in a seven-point run.

There was a rally back by the Privateers in the cards though as Gott, Irene Kitson and Kristi Gomez all registered kills as New Orleans moved back ahead 19-18 in the set. The Privateers went on a 5-1 run to close the set.

The Privateers trailed at the outset of the third 4-0 but a run of six straight points moved the Privateers ahead 7-6. After trading the lead a few times, the Privateers went ahead for good in the set when Zecchin served an ace to make it 21-20.

The last three points went to the Privateers to close out the match and the non-conference slate.

INSIDE THE BOX
Ewalefo led the way in kills with eight and added 10 digs. Zecchin finished with 21 digs on the match. Carver was in on eight blocks while Kitson had a career-best six blocks. Splitting the setter duties for the match, Claire Turner had 15 assists while Scroggins added 13. Gomez had six kills and eight digs.
