Privateers Outlast UIW in Five-Set Thriller

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers (7-7, 1-1) persevered in a grueling match that went the distance. New Orleans scored a 3-2 (21-25, 25-15, 12-25, 25-12, 16-14) victory over the UIW Cardinals (1-11, 0-2) on Saturday at the McDermott Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A fifth set that featured both teams going back-and-forth had 11 ties and four lead changes. It was New Orleans who got the last say in that matter though. UIW saved the Privateers' first opportunity at match point with a Risa Sena kill.

The Privateers came back with a Kristi Gomez kill that brought about a second match point. It was converted when during the rally, Annamarie Alvarez was called for being in the net on an attack. That sealed the Privateers' fourth win away from the Big Easy this season.

Down 2-1 and needing a big set, the Privateers were at their peak. A .476 attack percentage in 21 attempts overwhelmed the Cardinals. Meanwhile, UIW had as many errors as kills in the set. Molly Kehoe put the exclamation point on the set with kills on the last three rallies.

A tight first set saw the Cardinals pull away at the end. Three straight UIW points including kills from Sena and Jacqueline Arrington along with a service ace finished off the set.  The next two sets only saw two lead changes in total.
