Privateers Rally to Defeat Nicholls in Five Sets

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers (8-7, 2-1) showed resilience in battling from down early to a 3-2 (18-25, 16-25, 25-21, 25-19, 15-13) victory over the Nicholls Colonels (4-11, 1-2) on Tuesday night at the Human Performance Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers had to battle back from a couple of deficits deep in sets. In the third, New Orleans was down 19-15 after losing the first two sets. The Privateers had their first big response of the night though when Kamryn Scroggins turned a dig into set point at the end of the third set to finish off a 10-2 run to extend the match.

Down 7-3 in the fifth set, the Privateers came back to tie it at 8-8. The Colonels moved ahead 12-10 but it was the Privateers who had the final run to victory. New Orleans scored five of the last six points and Irene Kitson finished it off with the deciding kill.

The Privateers are now 2-1 in five-set matches this season.

New Orleans defensively held the Colonels under a .150 attack percentage over the third and fourth sets. The Privateers outpaced Nicholls 18-11 in kills as well to force a fifth set. The first big run came when the set was tied at 9-9. New Orleans scored five straight points and mostly traded rallies from there.

Trinity Jackson was part of the offensive spark for New Orleans as she had 15 kills over the last three sets. Sophia Ewalefo had a career best 20 kills on the night and Kamryn Scroggins reached the 50-assist mark.

INSIDE THE BOX
Defensively, Sheilah Purcell finished with 27 digs while Scroggins added 18 and Micah Hall posted nine. Courtney Roundtree was in on four blocks. New Orleans held Nicholls to just an .071 attack percentage in the final set.

New Orleans is now 21-9 all-time at home against Nicholls and has won seven of the last nine matches vs. the Colonels.
