NATCHITOCHES, La. – The New Orleans Privateers were engaged in their longest set of the season but they were defeated 3-0 (25-17, 33-31, 25-22) on Thursday by the Northwestern State Lady Demons at Prather Coliseum.
The second set was a marathon that lasted well into extra rallies. There were nine combined chances at set point between both teams and the Lady Demons' first five attempts were thwarted by a game Privateers squad.
However, after ascertaining a 32-31 lead on a Breanna Burrell kill, the Lady Demons scored on the next rally with Teresa Garza to end the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match. Garza for the Lady Demons and
Karen Cordero Barr for the Privateers both had seven kills in the set.
The day opened with a quick start by Northwestern State. They scored the first eight points of the match to establish a lead. The Privateers were able to level things off and the rest of the set was played evenly (17-17) but New Orleans did not get closer than within six points of the lead for the remainder of the set.
Northwestern State was locked in another tight battle early in the third set as the score was level at 9-9 through the first 18 rallies. From there, the Lady Demons scored on nine of the next 13 rallies to take a five-point lead.
The Privateers had another rally in them that tied the set up at 22-22. From there, Northwestern State rattled off the next three points on two kills and a tandem block.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Cordero earned her fifth double-double of the season with 15 kills and 18 digs.
Chandler Lee added nine kills and six digs.
Courtney Roundtree finished with eight kills and two total blocks.
Lani Alleman had 15 digs and
Defne Eciroglu finished with 34 assists.
Burrell led the Lady Demons' offense with 15 kills. Garza added 10 kills and 18 digs. Ashlyn Svoboda (16) and Symone Wesley (14) also landed in double figures in digs.
