PREVIEW: New Orleans Looks to Split West Coast Swing at San Francisco

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The New Orleans Privateers (4-5) will complete the second half of their west coast swing at San Francisco Monday night at War Memorial Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. The game will air on ESPN+ and the NASH 106.1 FM with Jude Young on the call.

In its last timeout, Jordan Johnson led New Orleans with 24 points, four rebounds and six assists in a close 87-82 defeat. Behind the senior was true freshman Jah Short, who had a career-night. Short, named the New Orleans Player of the Game, put up 18 points on perfect scoring from the field (7-7) with a team-high eight rebounds in 17 minutes.

Tyson Jackson scored nine points and three rebounds. New Orleans showed a balanced scoring effort with all 10 players who touched the floor contributing at least two points.

New Orleans overcame a seven-point deficit early in opening half to lead by as much as ten with six minutes remaining. While Johnson scored 10 of the Privateers' first 22 points, players like Turk Vincent, Jah Short, James Glisson III and Omar Henry provided an immediate spark off the bench to give the Privateers the lead at just under the 10-minute mark. 

The Privateers won the rebounding battle, 47-35, while converting 17 offensive boards to 21 second chance points. New Orleans shot 45% from the field overall.

SCOUTING SAN FRANCISCO 
The Dons (6-3) return to the bay area after their first road victory of the season defeating Vanderbilt (4-5), 73-60. Enjoying a career night in Nashville, Ndewedo Newbury finished with a season + career-high 17 points to go along with three rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal. Overall, the junior was 6-of-7 from the field, 3-of-4 from beyond-the-arc and 2-of-2 from the free throw line in 29 minutes played. Alongside Newbury, Marcus Williamstallied 18 points and a season-high seven rebounds in addition to adding four assists and one steal in 36 minutes. Jonathan Mogbo finished with 4 points, 14 rebounds, 10 assists and 1 block in 36 minutes. 

Through nine games is currently third in the country in field goal percentage (74.0). Additionally, he ranks third nationally in efficiency rating (PER) at 37.4.

As a unit, the Dons rank 19th in the country in scoring defense by allowing only 61.8 points per game. USF is also 27th nationally in steals per game (9.6) and 29th in turnovers forced per game (16.25).

SERIES WITH SAN FRANCISCO
This game marks the fourth meeting between the two teams dating back to 1981 with the last meeting in 1996 for the UNO Christmas Classic. New Orleans is 2-1 all-time against USF winning the last two meetings at both the Lakefront (94-84) and in San Francisco (72-68).
